When shopping for Christmas, many customers look for low prices. A survey shows which savings strategies they use – and which Christmas meals are popular.
Many people in Germany want to spend less money when shopping for food for Christmas this year than in 2023. One in two people want to save, as a survey by the market research company Yougov shows, which was available to the German Press Agency in advance. Around 2,100 people aged 18 and over were surveyed in a representative manner, and almost 1,600 celebrate Christmas.
When it comes to saving, different strategies are preferred: three out of ten customers want to take advantage of cheaper offers, buy from discounters rather than specialist stores and choose their own brands rather than branded products.
Others plan to buy less, for example by skipping the starter (16 percent), or switching to cheaper foods, for example chicken instead of goose (14). Meanwhile, some consumers want to change the category, i.e. forego organic products (11). 52 percent of those surveyed did not agree with any of the statements. Multiple entries were possible.
Potato salad and sausages at number 1
As is the case all year round, special offers at Christmas would play “a crucial role in reaching more price-conscious consumers,” said Yougov expert Martin Schlottmann.
In December 2023, households in Germany spent an average of 15 percent more than in the remaining months of the year, Yougov data shows.
When it comes to eating, many people want to have a classic Christmas meal. According to the survey, one in three people eat potato salad and sausages. Roast goose and duck (23/21 percent), raclette (19) and roast game (13 percent) are also popular. Fondue comes in at 11 percent. Almost one in seven respondents answered that there was none of the typical Christmas meals.
