The online marketplace Temu is popular with many consumers. However, according to a survey, in Germany he is viewed more critically than in other countries.
Customers in Germany rate the online marketplace Temu worse than in other countries such as Spain and the USA. Almost one in five people in this country (around 18 percent) who know Temu has a very negative image of the Chinese portal. This is shown by a representative survey by the market research institute Appinio. Overall, one in two people in Germany say they perceive Temu as “very negative”, “negative” or “somewhat negative”. Only in France is the rejection similar.
However, according to the survey, Temu’s image is not so bad in Italy, Great Britain, the USA and Spain. In Spain only 4 percent of consumers have a very negative image of the platform, in the USA it is 8 percent, in Italy and Great Britain 11 each. In France the proportion is around 16 percent.
A total of 6,000 people in six countries took part in the survey. A good 5,800 of them said they had already heard of Temu. They were asked how they felt about the online marketplace. Appinio conducted the survey on behalf of the e-commerce service provider Remazing. The reasons why participants viewed Temu positively or negatively were not asked.
Survey: 60 percent are afraid of counterfeits
A survey by the retail research institute IFH also shows that many consumers in Germany are skeptical about portals like Temu. This survey also included Shein. When asked why they couldn’t imagine buying from one of the portals, 83 percent cited the poor quality of the products. 60 percent are afraid of counterfeits.
Temu is now one of the largest online retailers in Germany. Measured by the number of orders, the marketplace came in sixth place in the first half of 2024, according to a survey by the opinion research institute Yougov. From January to June, around 1.3 million people in this country shopped at Temu.
The portal is criticized. Associations, politicians and consumer advocates complain about the poor quality and safety standards of the products. There are also complaints that the portal benefits from legal loopholes such as the 150 euro duty-free limit. The EU Commission initiated proceedings against Temu in October. Among other things, she suspects that the marketplace is not taking enough action against illegal products such as plagiarism.
