How to access Spanish citizenship through the law on grandchildren: necessary requirements
The process of obtaining nationality through the Democratic Memory Law is free and can last between 6 months and 1 year. To access citizenship, applicants must meet certain requirements, among which the following stand out:
- Birth certificate of the originally Spanish grandparent: Key document to prove the Spanish origin of the ancestor.
- Marriage certificate of the Spanish grandparent: In case you have married someone else.
- Death certificate of the Spanish grandparent (if applicable): If the grandfather has already died, it is necessary to present this item.
- Birth certificate of the mother/father, child of the originally Spanish grandfather/daughter: To demonstrate the direct link with the Spanish grandfather.
- Parents’ marriage certificate: If the parents are alive, their ID must also be presented. If they are deceased, the death certificate must be included.
- Birth certificate with the “Hague Apostille”: This document must be processed in the TAD (Distance Procedures) system of the Argentine Foreign Ministry.
- ID document: The applicant’s current identification.
One of the most significant changes of the new modification is the extension of the deadline until October 22, 2025 for those who have requested the appointment before that date. If the request cannot be met before that day, applicants may submit the request later, accompanied by supporting documentation.
