South Korea’s parliament passed a resolution calling for the president’s immediate arrest

The National Assembly of the Republic of Korea approved this Tuesday a resolution in which calls for immediate arrest of President Yoon Suk-yeol and seven other officials, after last week’s failed declaration of martial law. A permanent special prosecutor is also expected to be appointed to investigate Yoon following his treason indictment.

According to the law, a resolution of the National Assembly, like a bill, is subject to the proposal process, review by the jurisdiction committee and deliberation by the plenary session, but it will not have legal effect. Parliament also approved a bill on Tuesday to appoint a permanent special prosecutor to investigate the treason charge against President Yoon Suk-yeol, television footage showed.

Furthermore, the Office of Investigation on Corruption of High-ranking Officials (CIO) of the Republic of Korea requested a preliminary arrest order on Tuesday against former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyunin preparation for the dismissal of the Prosecutor’s request, according to several media outlets.

The preliminary arrest warrant can be requested when a suspect is at large and it is impossible to arrest him immediately.. If the court rejects the arrest order of the Prosecutor’s Office, the former Minister of Defense will be immediately released.

Kim is suspected of colluding with the embattled president over the unconstitutional declaration of martial law, announced by Yoon on the night of December 3 but annulled by Parliament hours later.
