Frank-Jürgen Weise becomes a supervisory board member at Thyssenkrupp Steel

Germany’s largest steel manufacturer is in transition. A man with extensive administrative experience is now joining the supervisory board.

The former head of the Federal Employment Agency, Frank-Jürgen Weise, is joining the supervisory board of the steel manufacturer Thyssenkrupp Steel. This is what those involved said. Weise was appointed as a neutral member of the control committee, it was said.

The 73-year-old is a renowned consultant and “initiator,” explained Supervisory Board Chairwoman Ilse Henne about the personnel who complete the Supervisory Board. Now we can concentrate “fully on the diverse tasks within the framework of the structural realignment of the company”. Knut Giesler, deputy chairman of the supervisory board and district manager of IG Metall North Rhine-Westphalia, explained that Weise’s expertise will help “to mediate between different positions where it is necessary.”

Weise was chairman of the board of the Federal Employment Agency (BA) from 2004 to 2017. He also headed the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees from September 2015 to the end of 2016.

The loss-making Thyssenkrupp steel division recently announced tough cuts with which Germany’s largest steel manufacturer wants to become competitive again. These include, among other things, cutting around 5,000 jobs by 2030, if possible without redundancies. A further 6,000 jobs are to be outsourced or transferred through the sale of businesses. The number of jobs would therefore fall from the current 27,000 to around 16,000. One location is also to be closed.
