Financial supervision is repositioning itself in the supervision of banks. Meanwhile, continuity at the top of the authority has been ensured until mid-2029.
New chief banking supervisor at the financial regulator Bafin: Nikolas Speer will take over the management of the banking supervision division at the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority (Bafin) on April 1, 2025, as the authority announced. Speer succeeds Raimund Röseler, who will retire at the end of March after more than 20 years at Bafin.
At the same time, Bafin President Mark Branson’s contract was extended early until mid-2029. Branson, who previously headed the Swiss financial regulator Finma, took over the management of Bafin on August 1, 2021 from Felix Hufeld, who had to vacate his post in the wake of the Wirecard scandal.
Speer, an industrial engineer, began his professional career in 1999 at the consulting firm Oliver Wyman. From 2004 to 2018 he worked in various positions at Commerzbank. Speer then worked at HSBC Germany, serving as Chief Risk Officer on the board from 2021.
