Farmer President: No falling butter prices expected

Bake cookies before Christmas? This is likely to be expensive at the moment because butter prices are high. Why will it stay that way for the time being?
Anyone who bakes Christmas cookies has to dig deep into their pockets for one ingredient: butter. Farmers President Joachim Rukwied initially does not expect any relief for consumers in Germany. “At the moment we are not expecting prices to fall due to the development of milk prices,” said Rukwied in Stuttgart.
Butter prices have recently risen sharply. According to the Federal Statistical Office, butter cost almost 40 percent more in October and November than in the respective months of the previous year. A current look at the supermarket refrigerated shelves shows that the prices for 250 gram packs of branded products are sometimes in the direction of four euros.
Farmer President Rukwied explained the increased prices, among other things, with an increased demand for milk fat, which creates alternative sales channels. And with an overall tight supply on the milk market, which also plays a role in the price increase.
For December, Rukwied again expected a slight increase in milk prices of two to three percent compared to November. It remains to be seen whether this will also result in rising butter prices, said Rukwied.
