The biotech Kheiron SA used the CRISPR-Cas9 technique, with which they used a small part of a gene from one mare and introduced it into another. The published mare is part of the “Hall of Fame” of the Argentine Association of Polo Horse Breeders (AACCP).

Heguy, famous polo player, veterinarian, founder of the AACCP and 17-time winner of the Argentine Polo Open, indicated: “The expectation is that, in this great first step of innovation, the Polo Pureza will acquire sprinter or explosion characteristics that it did not possess, and at the same time retain its other qualities.”

In that sense, the Scientific Director of Kheiron, Dr Gabriel Vichera, explained: “This important scientific development was carried out in an extremely rigorous manner, complying with the strict requirements of the National Directorate of Bioeconomy and CONABIA (national biotechnology regulation authority) so that it is not considered a Genetically Modified Organism (GMO), and therefore “It is a specimen that could be found freely in nature, and thus it has just been approved.”

Furthermore, he added: “This was done precisely with this objective, so as to comply with the regulations of the AACCP and the Argentine Rural Society (SRA)so that the achieved specimen is not considered with genetic doping. It should be noted that Argentina is a world leader in the development of standards in this regard.”

For his part, the founder & CEO of Proinvesa Group and President of Kheiron, Daniel Sammartinostated: “This achievement places Argentina at the global forefront of what could be considered in the future an innovative and challenging path of precision genetic progress, which accelerates the achievement of genetic improvements that today are sought by trial and error mechanisms.”
