More winter cereals are growing on sown areas in Germany. However, the increase is coming from a low level.
Germany’s farmers sowed more winter grain this autumn for the coming harvest season. At 4.8 million hectares, the cultivated area was almost 257,000 hectares or 5.6 percent larger than a year earlier, as the Federal Statistical Office extrapolated. In the fall of 2023, the very wet soil made it difficult for farmers to drive their machines into the fields.
For the most important grain type in Germany, winter wheat, the area under cultivation for the 2025 harvest season increased by 12.3 percent to 2.8 million hectares. Winter grains also include winter barley and rye as well as the wheat-rye hybrid Triticale.
