Gerardo Díaz Bartolomé will take over as Argentine consul in New York

In a series of changes announced regarding national representatives abroad, the Government appointed Gerardo Díaz Bartolome as the new head of the Consulate General and Argentine Promotion Center in New York.

The measure was made official through the Decree 1111/2024endorsed by President Javier Milei and the Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship, Gerardo Werthein.

A strategic change in the diplomatic corps

Díaz Bartolomé, until now responsible for the communication area of the Foreign Ministry, will take over to replace Pablo Piñero Aramburuwho had been appointed during the administration of Alberto Fernández. His management was temporarily extended by the new administration to cover vacant positions abroad.

The displacement of Piñero Aramburu adds to other modifications recently implemented in the foreign service. One of the most notable was the departure of Roberto Boschformer Argentine ambassador to Spain, due to differences with the current administration. Bosch would have faced relationship problems with colleagues and European authorities, according to reports. Instead, he was appointed Alejandro Alonso Sainzwho formally assumed representation in Madrid last week.

Díaz Bartolomé’s new role in New York

Díaz Bartolomé takes on the challenge of leading the consulate in one of the most influential cities in the world, which not only acts as a key bridge for the bilateral relationship with the United States, but also as a nerve center for the economic and cultural promotion of Argentina in the outside.

Context of diplomatic changes

These appointments are part of a broader policy by Javier Milei’s government to reorganize the foreign service, focusing on officials aligned with the objectives of the new administration. The restructuring also seeks to modernize diplomatic representations and strengthen Argentina’s strategic presence in key markets, especially in the field of trade and investment promotion.

With the transfer of Díaz Bartolomé to New York, the Government seeks to optimize diplomatic representation efforts in a dynamic and constantly evolving global context. Next year will be crucial to observe the results of these decisions in terms of international relations and strategic positioning of Argentina.

A diplomat with vast international experience

Since 2021, Díaz Bartolomé served as director of Strategic Communication and Digital Diplomacy of the Foreign Ministry, a role in which he led key initiatives to modernize national diplomacy. In addition, he has an outstanding career in the foreign service, including roles as deputy chief of mission at the Argentine embassy in Washington DC and representative in the Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York, where he was in charge of political affairs and decolonization.

On his LinkedIn profile, Díaz Bartolomé describes himself as a “fervent defender of multilateralism and passionate about foreign affairs”highlighting its commitment to digital diplomacy and innovation in international relations.

A strategic designation in times of change

The arrival of Díaz Bartolomé to the consulate in New York occurs at a crucial moment for Argentine foreign policy. With Donald Trump’s administration back in power, President Javier Milei seeks to consolidate a closer diplomatic and commercial axis with the United States. This ideological alignment was recently evident when Trump invited Milei to an event at his Mar-a-Lago mansion in Florida, a gesture that marked the beginning of a possible strengthening of bilateral ties.

Milei himself expressed his enthusiasm after the Republican victory, writing on X (formerly Twitter): “Congratulations on your formidable electoral victory. Now, make America great again. You know you can count on Argentina to carry out your task. Successes and blessings.”
