Union: IG Metall loses members

She fights for higher wages and better working conditions, but employees are still leaving IG Metall. But the further projects of the union remain secured.

IG Metall lost 2.1 percent of its members last year. The first chairman Jörg Hofmann attributed this to a lack of contact opportunities in the pandemic and job cuts in the important industries.

With 2.2 million members, IG Metall remains the largest German trade union. Due to higher wages, income from membership fees increased slightly to 592 million euros. “No political action, no strike will fail because of the money,” said chief cashier Jürgen Kerner, according to a statement.

Hofmann demanded a promise of security for the employees during the transformation of the industry through digitization and decarbonization. “We will not master the transformation in Germany with the dark triad of dismantling, closing, relocating. If Germany wants to remain a strong industrial country, massive investments must be made in the future, including that of the employees.” Companies should use future collective agreements with IG Metall: “Only those who draft a plan with their employees at an early stage also have a future.”
