Schnitzer: Office work might be possible even if you break a leg

Selling sausage by breaking your leg: it’s not possible. Working at a desk for a while if you have a broken leg: why not? A famous economist intervenes in the debate about part-time sick leave.

The economist Monika Schnitzer believes that part-time sick leave for a few hours a day makes sense under certain conditions. “Part-time sick leave can also make sense in terms of reintegration,” said the head of “Wirtschaftsweise” to the newspapers of the Funke media group.

Some work is also still partially possible depending on the illness: “If I work as a salesman behind the sausage counter and break my leg, then of course I have to take sick leave. But if I have an office job, then it might be possible for me despite my broken leg to work for a certain amount of time,” said Schnitzer.

Medical President Klaus Reinhardt brought up part-time sick leave against the backdrop of a changing world of work and home office. The idea was criticized by, among others, the German Federation of Trade Unions (DGB). The Federal Ministry of Health has already rejected the considerations.
