Stephan Leithner leads Deutsche Börse

He has been on the board of the DAX group for a long time; Leithner has been co-chief executive since October. Now the former Deutsche Bank manager is inheriting Theodor Weimer after seven years.

Change of boss at Deutsche Börse: Stephan Leithner, who has been co-head of the DAX group since October, took over sole management of the company at the turn of the year. Predecessor Theodor Weimer left the Frankfurt market operator at the end of 2024 after seven years at the top of the group.

The former Deutsche Bank manager Leithner joined Deutsche Börse in 2018 a few months after Weimer – previously head of HypoVereinsbank (HVB). The Austrian, who was born in 1966, was most recently responsible for the “Investment Management Solutions” department on the board, which includes, among other things, the recent billion-dollar takeover of Deutsche Börse: the Danish software provider Simcorp.

Reorganization also in the supervisory board

A change is also looming at the top of the supervisory board of Deutsche Börse AG: Immediately after the general meeting on May 14, 2025, the supervisory board wants to elect Clara-Christina Streit as Martin Jetter’s successor. Streit has been a member of the supervisory board of Deutsche Börse since 2019. She is also currently chairwoman of the supervisory board of the real estate group Vonovia and chairwoman of the government commission on the German Corporate Governance Code, which is responsible for rules for good corporate governance.

Jetter, who was only elected chairman of the supervisory board for another three years in May 2024, informed the company a little later that he would resign from his position after the general meeting in May 2025.

Weimer is handing Leithner over a company that has grown significantly in recent years. The board’s common goal was to once again exceed the previous year’s record result in 2024 – also thanks to the Simcorp takeover. According to the latest forecasts, the board expects earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (Ebitda) for 2024 to be between 3.3 billion euros and 3.4 billion euros. In 2023, the DAX group earned just over 2.9 billion euros operationally.
