The Organization of American States (OAS) This Friday, he described the arrest of Argentine gendarme Nahuel Gallo in Venezuela as a “crime against humanity.” He also considered that it was “a clear violation of international standards.”

The international organization condemned the “arbitrary” detention in a statement issued this Friday and demanded Gallo’s immediate release. At the same time, he asked that “the Venezuelan regime comply with international treaties and agreements on human rights and international relations.”

Regarding the strict detention conditions suffered by the Argentine gendarme, the OAS states that “incommunication and the denial of consular and legal assistance represent a clear direct violation of the Vienna Convention on Consultative Relations.”

The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) granted precautionary measures in favor of the Argentine gendarme kidnapped in VenezuelaNahuel Agustín Gallo.

“As revealed by the statements of high authorities of Venezuela, No actions have been taken to guarantee communication between Nahuel Gallo and the country of which he is a national. Furthermore, the Commission observes that there is no internal possibility of requesting protection in favor of the beneficiary.“says the official document.

In its letter, the international organization demands that the Nicolás Maduro regime:

  • adopt the necessary measures to protect the rights to life and personal integrity of the beneficiary. In particular:
  • report whether the beneficiary is in the custody of the State and the circumstances of his or her detention; or, of the measures taken in order to determine their whereabouts or destination;
  • specify whether the beneficiary was presented to a competent court to review his detention if he had been accused of crimes;
  • expressly indicate the court that would hear her criminal case, if one exists, or the reasons why she has not been released to date;
  • allow the beneficiary to communicate with his family and trusted legal representatives, giving them full access to his criminal record, if any; and
  • enables you to have communication with the country of which you are a national; and
  • report on the actions taken in order to investigate the alleged events that gave rise to this precautionary measure and thus avoid their repetition.
