Marcelo Gallardo is building the River 2025 with an eye on key challenges such as Copa Libertadores and the Club World Cup. With five reinforcements already securedthe Núñez club is still active in the pass marketand one of the names that is starting to generate noise is that of Jonathan Calleri.
The 31-year-old Argentine forward currently plays for Sao Paulo, Brazil club where he is very loved due to the lots of goals that marked, many of them of preponderant importance.
Calleri, trained in All Boys and with a remembered time at Boca Juniors between 2014 and 2015is one of the alternatives that the doll’s coaching staff considers to reinforce the attack. However, from the millionaire they clarify that they did not begin formal conversations and that they would only advance in his hiring if the departure of one of the current forwards, such as Miguel Borja or Adam Bareiro.
The possible incorporation of Calleri is not without controversy, since in the past, the player would have rejected proposals from River due to its strong link with Boca, where won two national titles and one Argentine Cup. This emotional factor, added to the economic difficulties that the operation could entail, calls into question the feasibility of the transfer.
Calleri will play in Bologna for the next six months.

Why are they looking for Calleri?
Although his arrival would represent an unusual movement due to his xeneize past, Calleri could be a key piece for Gallardo’s offensive scheme. His hierarchy and experience are qualities that fit the aspirations of a River that seeks to consolidate itself as a protagonist in all competitions.
However, the negotiations will have to overcome the sporting, economic and sentimental obstacles that surround this possible incorporation. From the Núñez institution they do not rule out using any of the forward centers they have as part of the negotiation.
Calleri’s journey
During his two stages in the Brazilian team, Calleri played 208 matchesnoted 76 goals and provided 22 assists. Furthermore, he was crowned as top scorer of the 2016 Copa Libertadores and was key in obtaining two local titlesestablishing himself as a prominent figure in São Paulo.
His career also includes spells for European clubs such as West Ham United of England (2016-17), Las Palmas Sports Union (2017-18), Deportivo Alavés (2018-19), Espanyol from Barcelona (2019-20) and Osasuna (2020-21), before returning to the São Paulo club in 2021.
For his part, in Boca he played a total of 61 matchesscoring 26 goals and delivering 12 assists. As is known, the xeneize also polled him several times to return, but the response was also negative.
