New vegan Nutella: That’s how expensive it is and that’s what’s in it

From now on in Germany
That’s how expensive the new vegan Nutella is – and that’s what’s in it

The new “Plant Based” variant of Nutella is now available in Germany. It costs significantly more than the conventional version – and still consists mainly of sugar.

In German supermarkets and discounters you can now buy Nutella jars with eye-catching bright green lids. This is the new vegan version of Ferrero’s classic spread. In contrast to conventional Nutella, it does not require milk powder and, according to the manufacturer, it tastes like the original.

“Plant Based” Nutella has been sold in France, Belgium and Italy since last year and is now being launched on the market in this country. The vegan Nutella is now available to buy at Rewe, Edeka, Aldi-Süd, Kaufland, Netto-Markendiscount and Hit, among others, reports thesmittel-Zeitung.

However, it costs significantly more than the usual variant: At Rewe, for example, customers pay 3.99 euros for vegan Nutella in a 350-gram jar, which is 11.40 euros per kilo. The original costs 3.49 euros for 450 grams, the equivalent of 7.76 euros per kilo. There are probably no larger storage packs, as is usual with the milk variant, for the time being.

Nutella with chickpeas – and lots of sugar

Instead of milk powder, vegan Nutella contains hazelnuts and additional plant-based ingredients such as chickpeas and rice syrup. According to Ferrero, it is suitable for people with lactose intolerance. According to the manufacturer, anyone who has a milk protein allergy should still not eat it. Since the product is manufactured in a factory that also uses milk, it may contain traces of milk.

Don’t let the lettuce green lid fool you too much: vegan Nutella is by no means healthy either. Sugar remains the main ingredient – there are 45.4 grams of sugar per 100 grams. In conventional Nutella it is around 56 percent. The controversial palm oil is still contained in abundance. However, like the original, Nutella uses certified, sustainable palm oil, which even the environmental protection organization WWF has praised in the past.

Ferrero is not a pioneer with its new creation. Other brands have been offering vegan nut nougat creams for a long time, with sustainably grown palm oil or without palm oil at all. Now the top dog has also managed to bring such a variant onto the market.
