Apple billions give Ireland a large budget surplus

In September, Apple lost the tax dispute with the EU Commission – Ireland now benefits from this. Because of the billions in additional payments, the Ministry of Finance is recording a significant surplus.
Ireland has posted a significantly higher budget surplus because of Apple’s billion-dollar tax back payment. With the iPhone manufacturer’s almost eleven billion euros, the increase amounts to 12.8 billion euros, as the Ministry of Finance announced in Dublin. For comparison: the costs of basic child welfare in Germany were initially estimated at twelve billion euros.
Last September, Apple lost a year-long legal dispute with the EU Commission before the European Court of Justice (ECJ). The background was tax breaks that had long been granted to Apple in Ireland. The EU Commission considers this approach to distort competition and asked Apple to pay a total of 13 billion euros in taxes plus interest. After a long legal battle, the Brussels authorities were right.
Apple announced in October that it had recorded a profit of 13.5 billion euros in the previous quarter despite the back tax payment.
