Argentina prepares for the legislative elections of October 26, 2025 that will renew half of the seats of Deputies and one third of the seats of the Senate. In the Upper House, they will be put into play a total of 24 seats in the midst of a rarefied climate between the ruling party and the opposition and with the senators under scrutiny for the freezing of the increase in their diets.

In detail, the Chamber of Senators will renew 24 seats for six years corresponding (three for each district) to: Capital Federal, Salta, Santiago del Estero, Tierra del Fuego, Chaco, Entre Ríos, Río Negro and Neuquén. Union for the Homeland (former Frente de Todos) will be the political force that more renovations will look in the this year’s elections.

Legislative elections 2025: the panorama in the Senate

The elections scheduled for October 26, 2025 will not be just another date for Argentine political forces. After the radical change presented by the arrival of President Javier Milei to power – together with his party, La Libertad Avanza – the elections to renew representatives of the Legislative Branch will be a key point in the government’s aspirations for its mandate. The Chamber of Senators of Argentina is made up of a total of 72 legislators representing the 23 provinces and the Autonomous City of Buenos Aires.

In the midst of tensions between Milei and Victoria Villarruel, head of the Senate Chamber, the country will elect new representatives of the Legislative Branch.

The ruling party will seek to increase representation in the upper house, where it only has 6 senators of its own in its block after the departure of Francisco Paoltroni. On the other hand, the former Frente de Todos, led by the Formoseño Jose Mayans It has 34 representatives after the expulsion of the now former senator of dissident Peronism Edgardo Kueider -arrested weeks ago in Paraguay, with more than USD 200,000 undeclared-, and the upcoming inauguration of the current provincial deputy of La Cámpora, Stefanía Cora, instead of the aforementioned Kueider. This would leave the opposition force to only three seats from its own quorum.

However, the political future may change abruptly during the next elections. The Peronist opposition must renew a total of 24 seats and its performance in the elections will mark the future of the Upper House, a legislative body that presented different obstacles to the projects of the libertarian administration, as it was rejected the Decree of Necessity and Urgency No. 656/24signed by Milei, where it additionally assigned funds from the national administration to the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE).

In this election, one of the main territories that will be under focus will be the City of Buenos Aires, where the radical and president of the centenary party ends his term, Martin Lousteau; Guadalupe Tagliaferri (Pro), and Mariano Recalde.

Months before the elections, it remains to be seen whether La Libertad Avanza and the PRO, led by former president Mauricio Macri, will present a joint electoral offer or will go their separate ways, in a relationship that has become strained in recent weeks. In this scenario, the Minister of National Security, Patricia Bullrich, once again expressed her position of total political alignment with Javier Milei and left a warning for Mauricio Macri and the PRO: “ They have to define themselves, either they are official or they are opposition“he highlighted.

10 months before the elections, a dance of names takes place in the different political forces to define who will be candidates for senators. In detail, the officials who will renew their seats are:
