How expensive will it be? Many health insurance companies, including TK, have just increased their contributions significantly. But the head of the health insurance company fears that this is far from the end of the story.

Those with statutory health insurance are threatened with further rising contributions: The head of the largest German health insurance company TK, Jens Baas, fears a medium-term increase in health insurance contributions to 20 percent without political intervention. “That will happen in this decade if the legislature doesn’t take countermeasures,” Baas told the “Süddeutsche Zeitung”. He is not optimistic that there will be fundamental reforms in the health system. “Politicians don’t want to change that, necessary redistributions or reforms are anything but convenient,” said the CEO of the Techniker Krankenkasse.

The TK also had to increase its additional contribution

At the beginning of the year, the majority of the 94 statutory health insurance companies significantly increased the additional contribution to an average of 2.91 percent of the income subject to contributions. The Techniker Krankenkasse has increased its additional contribution from 1.2 to 2.45 percent. This is on top of the general rate of 14.6 percent of gross wages.

The average for all health insurance companies is around 17.5 percent. Employees have to pay half of this, the employer pays the other half. The National Association of Statutory Health Insurance Funds had recently assumed that health insurance contributions would continue to rise next year.
