Shrek 5 will hit theaters to celebrate 25 years since the first film in the franchise was released in 2001.
Universal Pictures is adjusting its movie release schedule for upcoming titles in two venerable animation franchises.
The studio announced on Friday that the premiere of Shrek 5 by DreamWorks Animation is scheduled for Wednesday, December 23, 2026after having previously been dated for July 1, 2026. Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon They are directing Shrek 5 with Brad Ableson as co-director. Gina Shay and Chris Meledandri produce film that sees return of voice stars Michael Myers (Shrek), Eddie Murphy (Donkey) and Cameron Diaz (Fiona).
Universal advances the premiere of Minions 3
In a twin movement, Minions 3 from Illumination is now scheduled to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, moving up its previously planned release date of June 30, 2027. Pierre Coffinwho directed the first three films of Despicable Me and the first Minions spin-off movie, is directing Minions 3 from a script by Brian Lynch. Coffin voices the mischievous yellows who were introduced as companions of former supervillain Gru (voiced by Steve Carell) in the 2010 title Despicable Me.
Universal also announced that an untitled Illumination event film will now replace Minions 3’s previous release date of Wednesday, June 30, 2027, after the untitled film was initially planned to hit theaters on March 19, 2027. 2027.
