Tesla is bracing itself against the crisis in the German electric car market. Elon Musk’s company has a lot of hope for a new model.

The first cars of the revised Model Y are rolling off the assembly line at the US electric car manufacturer Tesla in Grünheide near Berlin. “From today we are starting to produce the first vehicles,” said a company spokeswoman when asked. However, it is not yet the official start of production, she added. Customers cannot yet order the new model. She did not provide any further details.

Tesla manufactures its Model Y at several locations around the world. It is considered the most produced electric car in the world. However, the US manufacturer led by tech billionaire Elon Musk, which also produces a number of other models, suffered its first decline in deliveries of its electric cars in more than a decade last year.

Tesla delivered almost 1.79 million vehicles to customers worldwide in 2024. That was 19,355 fewer than in 2023. In the weak German market for electric cars, the group’s new registrations fell by a good 26,000 to just under 38,000 vehicles in 2024, according to the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA). Tesla, which was still the market leader in e-car registrations in Germany in 2022, was only in third place behind Volkswagen and BMW.

The new Model Y, a so-called crossover SUV, is intended to help get back on the growth path. The only Tesla factory in Europe in Grünheide, the so-called Gigafactory, has around 11,000 employees. According to previous information, it supplies the European continent, but also the Near and Middle East and Taiwan.
