Study: Many young people could get into training more quickly

Thousands of people are unable to find a training position after school and instead begin temporary internships or courses. But many could actually get started straight away, according to a survey.

According to a study, with individual support and a wider range of options, many young people could start training earlier instead of first taking internships and courses. This was the result of a nationwide survey of skilled workers, as the commissioning Bertelsmann Foundation announced.

Every year, almost 250,000 young people take advantage of a state-funded measure because they cannot find a training place. According to the study, a large proportion of them would be able to start training straight away with the right offers.

Around 1,540 specialists who support young people in the transition from school to work were surveyed at the end of 2024 on behalf of the Bertelsmann Foundation and the German Children and Youth Foundation. These included employees of job centers, vocational schools, educational institutions and youth welfare institutions. From their point of view, more individual support is needed for young people when starting their professional lives.

Tens of thousands of training positions are unfilled

Almost 70,000 training positions will remain unfilled in Germany in 2024, it was said. And at the same time, almost a quarter of a million young people took up a measure such as a company internship because they couldn’t find an apprenticeship after school or because they lacked important skills. In the transition phase, they should acquire basic knowledge – i.e. acquire job-related skills or obtain a school leaving certificate.

However, almost two thirds of young people have the prerequisites to start training straight away – some of them with supervision, said the specialists surveyed. More precisely: a good quarter of young people could actually start training straight away if there was a suitable place for them. And a good third of the experts believe they can take on the role of trainee, provided they receive professional support.

According to the Bertelsmann Foundation, these offers actually only make sense for around a third of young people in the transition sector. The potential of young people needs to be better exploited. The Children and Youth Foundation emphasized that the funding capacities could then be used more specifically for young people who really urgently needed the support.
