Martín García Moritán will no longer be the Argentine ambassador to Uruguay

The career diplomat, soon to turn 70 and retire, will become part of the Passive Corps of the Foreign Service.

The Argentine ambassador in Uruguay, Martin Garcia Moritanwill leave his position at the end of February in accordance with the provisions of the government of Javier Milei this Wednesday through the Foreign Ministry, according to what was published in the Official Gazette.

Decree 29/2025 was published this Tuesday in the Official Gazette Argentinean establishing that García Moritán will be transferred from the Embassy to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship. “Move from the Embassy of the Republic in Uruguay to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, International Trade and Worship to the extraordinary and plenipotentiary ambassador Martin Garcia Moritan“, establishes the document published by the Argentine government.

Who will occupy García Moritán’s position will be Luis Alberoas chargé d’affaires ad interim at the Argentine Embassy.

García Moritán’s career

The Argentine ambassador in Uruguay He was born on March 12, 1955 in Buenos Aires and graduated as a lawyer from the Faculty of Law and Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires. On the other hand, he graduated from the National Foreign Service Institute and entered the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Worship in 1983.

García Moritán was appointed Argentine ambassador in Uruguay in February 2024, replacing Alberto Iribarne. Previously, he had been vice chancellor, special representative for Terrorism Affairs, director of Federal and Electoral Affairs and deputy director of the Directorate of Central America, the Caribbean and Mexico, in addition to other positions in the Undersecretary of Southern and Border Affairs and in the Undersecretary of Foreign Policy.

On the other hand, he also served in the Special Mission to the Holy See in the Mediation of the Argentine-Chilean border conflict of Beagle in 1984. In addition, he participated in diplomatic representations in Brazil and Bolivia, as well as in the Mission of Argentina to the United Nations in 1994 to 1997 and 2003 to 2009.
