December construction costs tripled inflation, but had no real increase in 2024

This result arises as a result of an increase of 0.9% in the “Materials” chapter, 17.6% in the “Labor” chapter and 4.8% in the “General expenses” chapter.

The construction cost index rose 8.5% in Decembermore than triple the inflation (2.7%), although in 2024 it lagged behind and did not have a real increase: it rose 91.4% compared to a consumer price index (CPI) of 117.8%. This appears from the latest report of the National Institute of Statistics and Censuses (INDEC).

The rise in December is explained by the rise in 0.9% in the chapter “Materials”of 17.6% in the chapter “Hand of work” and of 4.8% in the chapter “Overheads”.

It should be noted that last year was marked by the elimination of public works, which hit the sector hard.

In the accumulated of 2024, what increased the least was the chapter of Materials, that barely rose 47.7%, followed by the overheadswhich rose 134% and labour (151.8%). This last segment is established between the joint agreements of the Construction Workers’ Union of the Argentine Republic (UOCRA) and the subcontractors.

Construction cost: how much did the materials cost?

Within the increases in the material chapter, the increases in: 1) Granite countertops (+3.5%) stood out; 2) Carpet floors (+3.2%); 3) Raw wood and wood for roofs and floors (+3.1%); 4) Lighting devices and electric intercom (+2.5%); 5) Elevators (+2.4%); 6) Glass (+2%); 7) Concrete and cement products (+1.8%); 8) Insulating products (+1.7%).

In addition, the declines in Pipes and iron accessories (-1.8%) stood out; Medium and low voltage cables and conductors (-1.7%); Electrical control devices (panels, switches and sockets) (-0.4%); Paintings and related products (-0.2%); Metal products for sanitary and electrical installation (-0.1%).

Increases in work items

During Decemberthe work items that rose the most stood out: masonry (+14.3%), structure (+12.3%), earth movement (+7%), and plastering (+6.6%).
