UEFA takes action against pizzeria – because of pizza “Champignons League”

A pizzeria in Hesse received mail from Uefa: The reason is a pizza called “Mushroom League”. The name is apparently too similar to that of the premier football class.

Puns are a popular way in gastronomy to draw customers’ attention to dishes and products. That’s how the pizzeria “Pizza Wolke” from Gießen does it. There they invented a pizza called “Champignons League” – which is basically nothing more than a pizza topped with mushrooms. But because of this product, there is now trouble with Uefa.

The European Football Association is taking legal action against the pizzeria from Hesse. The restaurateurs have published a corresponding letter from a law firm on their Instagram account. Apparently, the Uefa is too similar to the “Uefa Champions League” – and this is a registered trademark. The football association is trying to protect this, because the pizzeria has also entered its creation as a word mark in the trademark register.

UEFA faces criticism for lawyers’ letter

Shadi Souri, owner of the “Pizza Cloud”, is not disturbed by the letter on behalf of Uefa: “I feel honored,” he writes on Instagram. The Giessener offers frozen pizzas and was dubbed “Hesse’s coolest pizza baker” by the “Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung” last year. Uefa’s reaction only shows “that we’re absolutely on the right track,” he says: “We won’t stop until we’re in everyone’s chests and eventually baked in everyone’s oven.”

The lawyers will probably have to clarify to what extent the name of his pizza is legally permissible. The case has already attracted some attention on social networks – and many users have already formed a clear opinion: They find the action taken by the big Uefa against a small pizzeria in Hesse to be unsympathetic and disproportionate. In any case, with the “Pizza Cloud” one remains relaxed, judging by the words on Instagram: “Let’s see how far Uefa gets.”
