The information that the new British sanctions may affect the freezing of the assets of a number of Russian companies is alarming for the Kremlin. This was announced on Monday, January 31, by the press secretary of the President of the Russian Federation Dmitry Peskov.
“This is a very disturbing announcement from London. I think they are disturbing not only for us, for our companies. This demonstrates the fair unpredictability of London, and, probably, this is a cause for serious concern in general for international financial structures and business structures,” Peskov said.
According to him, the Anglo-Saxons are pretty pumping up tension on the European continent. “Of course, here we Europeans have something to think about when a country that is outside our continent escalates tension at home. This is not true. Until we, Europeans, understand that this harms us all, we think that it is unlikely that we will be able to correct the situation, ”Peskov told reporters.
Peskov added that London’s statement also “undermines the investment attractiveness and attractiveness of the UK” in general.
“It’s not often you see or hear such direct threats to attack a business. An attack by a single country on Russian business implies retaliatory measures, they will be formulated based on our interests. In case it is required,” the Kremlin spokesman said.
On January 31, it became known that new UK sanctions against Russia could affect the assets of Russian energy companies. According to The Times newspaper, the sanctions include an asset freeze and a ban on the entry into the United Kingdom of individuals and entities of “strategic importance” to the Russian authorities. The new sanctions package is expected to be presented by the British Cabinet this Monday.
On January 30, UK Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced that the UK would expand sanctions against Russia next week. The minister indicated that London is going to expand the list of sanctions legislation so that any company representing the interests of the Kremlin could be subject to restrictions.
In response, Dmitry Novikov, First Deputy Chairman of the State Duma Committee on International Affairs, said that British sanctions had no effect on the lives of Russian citizens.
The fact that the European Union (EU) and the United Kingdom, with the support of the United States, began to develop a new package of anti-Russian sanctions due to Russia’s alleged aggression against Ukraine became known on January 28. According to the Financial Times, restrictions will be imposed on Russian newcomer gas projects.
In recent weeks, Western politicians and members of the media have been spreading numerous speculations about possible Russian aggression against Ukraine. The Russian side has repeatedly denied such statements. Moscow stressed that it had no plans to “invade” Ukraine.
