There are still too few trainees. Many companies want more modern vocational schools and curricula. Another factor comes into play.
Young talent is in short supply in many companies, and from the companies’ perspective, something needs to change in terms of vocational training. According to a survey, 77 percent of German companies see this need for change, as the Munich Ifo Institute found out together with the personnel service provider Randstad. “Companies are primarily demanding more modern vocational schools and curricula as well as an improved image of vocational training,” says Ifo researcher Jonas Hennrich. 71 percent of the HR managers surveyed were in favor of this. 52 percent would like to see increased cooperation between vocational schools and training companies.
Overall, the survey shows a shortage of trainees. 41 percent of companies say they have fewer trainees than desired. 1 percent has too many, 58 percent their desired number, although large companies tend to have it easier than small ones.
The majority are satisfied with the quality in-house
Around two thirds of HR managers cite a lack of qualifications and a lack of applications as reasons for difficulties in finding trainees. Large companies tend to lack the quality of applicants, while small companies lack the number of applications.
However, companies are usually satisfied with the quality of their trainees. 8 percent find it very good, another 67 percent think it is good. 22 percent say less good and only 3 percent say unsatisfactory.
