Despite the weak economy, the shortage of skilled workers remains the biggest concern for domestic medium-sized companies. This is shown by the SME barometer from the consulting firm EY, for which 500 medium-sized companies were surveyed. 23 percent of companies want to create jobs in the next six months, 18 percent want to cut jobs. For the rest, the number of employees should remain the same.

There are clear regional differences here: While 32 percent of Viennese companies lead the ranking with planned increases, in Burgenland only 14 percent of companies are planning to hire new employees. In Upper Austria, 19 percent of companies want more employees, 21 percent expect job cuts.

The real estate and construction sectors are currently suffering most from the shortage of skilled workers, followed by tourism, industry and trade. More than one in four companies cannot fill vacancies in production.
