Presidency

In an extensive analysis, The Wall Street Journal (WSJ) highlighted the international impact of the president Javier Mileiwhom he describes as a key figure within a rising global right.

The publication highlighted the connection between Milei and the new US head of state, Donald Trump, as well as with Elon Musk, who share an agenda focused on deregulation and reduction of the State.

Deregulations and cuts in Argentina

The WSJ highlighted Milei’s policies aimed at cutting public spending and eliminating regulations, calling these measures an effort to transform the Argentine economic system. According to the report, his government managed to reduce real public spending by 30%, laying off more than 36,000 state employees and closing ministries such as Women, Gender and Diversity.

The article also points out the social impacts of these policies: while the cuts generated inflationary relief and improvements in real wages, significant challenges persist, such as the high level of poverty and unemployment.

The challenge of bureaucracy

Federico Sturzenegger, Minister of Deregulation, was a prominent figure in the article, emphasizing that Argentina’s problem lies in “the trap of the legal system.” Among the reforms, regulations that controlled prices, restricted sales of medicines and taxed purchases abroad were eliminated.

Broken promises and future challenges

Despite signs of economic recovery, WSJ warns of pending obstacles, such as a shortage of reserves at the Central Bank, which limits the promise of dollarization.

According to Benjamin Gedan, from the Wilson Center, the patience of Argentines could run out if quality jobs are not generated.

With this report, the WSJ positions Milei as a controversial but central figure on the international political board, with a model that generates both admiration and criticism.
