Survey: Restrictions due to expensive food

The days of drastic price increases for food are over. However, many people still notice at the checkout that it is becoming more expensive – with consequences.
According to a survey, increased food prices continue to be a burden for many supermarket customers. 39 percent of those surveyed say they have to limit their purchases because of this, as the survey commissioned by the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations on the occasion of the Green Week food trade fair in Berlin showed. That’s why 60 percent don’t have to limit themselves. For the survey, the Forsa Institute reportedly surveyed 1,001 people aged 18 and over from December 2nd to 4th.
The association’s head of consumer policy, Michaela Schröder, told the German Press Agency: “It must not be the case that a healthy diet becomes more and more a question of wallet.” The consumer advice centers are calling for an observatory that records costs and prices in the chain from the farmers to the supermarket. Retailers should also be required to report their current prices for staple foods to a consistent online platform to make comparisons easier.
For a long time, food prices had risen faster than general inflation. According to the Federal Statistical Office, they increased in price by more than 30 percent between 2020 and 2023. In December 2024, consumers had to pay 2.0 percent more than a year earlier – with overall inflation of 2.6 percent.
