At the beginning of the year, letter postage rose sharply. That brings more money into the post office’s coffers – one more reason for better pay for post employees in Germany?

In the struggle for a new collective agreement for 170,000 postmen, parcel carriers and other logistics employees, the Verdi union is insisting on a significant pay increase of seven percent. “The still high costs and food prices can only be overcome with significant wage increases for employees,” explained Verdi Vice President Andrea Kocsis before the second round of negotiations, for which representatives of the postal company and the union will meet on Thursday and Friday.

The trade unionist pointed out that the incomes of the vast majority of postal workers are still below the median income in Germany. Verdi is calling for a one-year collective agreement. Wages should increase by seven percent and employees should get additional vacation days.

Postal management emphasizes that a new collective agreement would have to be economically viable. The need for investment is high and the volume of letters is shrinking. A company spokesman says they are entering the second round of negotiations constructively.
