Many investors see black for the German economy, but the view of their own wallets is more confident – especially among younger ones. This can also be seen in savings behavior.

Despite the economic crisis, many investors are optimistic with a view of their own money. In a survey by the Funds provider Union Investment, 59 percent of the participants expect the economic situation in Germany to deteriorate in the next twelve months. At the same time, more than half (53 percent) expects that the financial situation of one’s own budget remains stable during the period. Almost a third (30 percent) even expects an improvement, only 16 percent with a deterioration.

Economic worries leave many investors cold

Young people in particular are optimistic about their finances, shows the study, for which a good 1,000 people were interviewed by market researcher Forsa online in November. While 41 percent of 20 to 29 year olds believe in improving their financial situation, the 50 to 59 year olds are only 17 percent.

Investors are divided into the question of whether the situation of German industry affects their personal finances: 49 percent of those surveyed do not expect consequences, 44 percent, on the other hand. In 2019, investors were more pessimistic: At that time, 61 percent feared negative effects.

Younger people in particular want to save more

The view of the finances is also reflected in saving. More than half of the respondents (53 percent) want to stick to their savings behavior. Over a third “definitely wants to save more” or “probably” (37 percent). The 20 to 29 year olds are therefore 47 percent.

“Anyone who is optimistic about their own finances obviously dares to put more on their side for purchases or their own pension scheme,” said Kerstin Knoefel, head of private customers at Union Investment.
