Letters and packages: Millions of shipments remain due to post-warning strikes

Warning strikes at Deutsche Post have meant that millions of letters and hundreds of thousands of packages arrive late at the recipient. Around five percent of the average daily quantity of parcel and letter disposal were affected on Wednesday, the Deutsche Post said, which belongs to the logistics group DHL. The percentage is the nationwide cut. But it was not strike everywhere. Where there were workloads, significantly more than five percent of the programs remained for the time being.

Around 4,000 employees followed the strike call call in various regions, it said from the post office. Verdi spoke of 5,000 participants. Large cities such as Düsseldorf, but also rural regions, were affected. It was not about the city -states on Wednesday.

In 2023, Post had promoted an average of 46 million letters and 6.3 million packages per working day, the numbers for 2024 have not yet been available – with a view to these numbers, two million letters and a few hundred thousand packages have been left behind on Wednesday.

Verdi drums for significantly more money

The union justified the procedure with the fact that last week in the second round of negotiations last week there was hardly any movement of management and no tangible results. The company emphasizes that a new collective agreement must be economically justifiable. It indicates that the mailing quantities in the digital age decrease and high investments are necessary.

Verdi insists on a wage plus of seven percent and three extra vacation days. If you are a Verdi member, you should even get four. According to the union, the additional leisure is necessary to take into account the increased workload and to relieve the employees sustainably.

Operation on a strike delivery base is greatly reduced

In front of a Düsseldorf delivery base for letters and packages, some dozen DHL employees came to a strike post on Wednesday morning. There was hardly any movement on the company premises: numerous vans parked there, although they should have been traveling for a long time at this time. Only occasionally a van left the company premises. The responsible union secretary Stephan Somberg was satisfied with the response in the workforce. “The willingness to strike is very high, today’s day is likely to be an economic hit and increase the pressure.”

The third round of negotiations is scheduled for February 12 and 13. Then Post wants to present an offer. The company therefore considers the warning strikes “unnecessary because they ultimately take the expense of our customers,” the postal spokesman said beforehand. Deutsche Post has around 170,000 collective bargaining employees in its letter and package business.
