The KI law of the European Union is the first cross-state law on the use of artificial intelligence. The first rules came into force.
In the European Union, new rules for dealing with artificial intelligence (AI) apply. According to the EU’s AI Act (AI Act), the use of AI programs is prohibited, which are evaluated by social behavior. This allows people to be divided into behavioral categories, rewarded or punished.
Face recognition in public space – for example by video surveillance in public places – should also not be allowed in principle. However, there are exceptions: Police and other security authorities should be allowed to use such facial recognition in order to be able to pursue certain crimes such as human trafficking and terrorism.
On February 2, 2025, companies that develop or use AI, evaluate their systems according to the degree of risk and take suitable measures in order to meet the legal requirements. According to the EU Commission, the aim of the new regulation is not only the protection of consumers’ rights. One also wants to make sure that AI is used responsibly.
