Health: Survey: Demolation requests create a billion dollar market

According to an international survey, the widespread weight loss requests in Europe and North America create a billion dollar market for sports industry, food industry, pharmaceutical manufacturers and healthcare. More than half of the 2,150 respondents in the United States, Germany and Great Britain tried to lose weight last year. For the investigation, the business consultancy Strategy & the Appinio survey institute commissioned. 700 people took part in Germany.

Accordingly, over 70 percent prefer sports, but considerable shares of the participants also buy calorie -reduced food, nutritional supplements and weight loss supplements.

Majority classifies itself as overweight

The demoscopes first asked the participants about their body measure index (BMI), which indicates the body weight in relation to height. Over 61 percent – also the respondents in Germany – ordered themselves from a BMI of 25 and above, from which a person is considered overweight according to the German obesity society. A good 71 percent had tried to reduce their weight through more movement, but 29 percent also said that they had bought calorie -reduced food. A almost 13 percent of not prescription weight loss supplements had taken a almost quarter.

High issue, but not unlimited

Almost 40 percent declared their willingness to spend up to 100 euros a month to achieve their weight loss goals, even significantly more shares. However, according to the survey, the willingness to pay is not unlimited: According to the survey, only a small minority of 14 percent is willing to invest more than a year in money.
