Tax reduction could reduce electricity costs by 7 percent

Several parties want to reduce electricity tax after the federal election. What would that bring private households?

A reduction in electricity tax on the minimum value permitted in the EU would reduce the electricity costs according to calculations by the Verivox comparison portal by almost 7 percent. Consumers in Germany would be relieved of around 3 billion euros.

In their programs for the Bundestag election, Greens, FDP and AfD come to reduce electricity tax to the European minimum. The Union says that the electricity tax should be reduced. The SPD also wants to relief.

Strong burden on taxes and levies

The electricity tax for private consumers is currently 2.05 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh). The European minimum size is 0.1 cents per kWh.

According to Verivox, a family with an annual consumption of 4,000 kWh would pay 93 euros less if the electricity tax is reduced to this minimum value, because in addition to electricity tax, less VAT would also be due. A two-person household with a consumption of 2,800 kWh could expect an annual relief of 65 euros, a single household (1,500 kWh).

Thorsten Storck, energy expert at Verivox, said: “The horrendous electricity prices in the energy crisis year 2022 are now a thing of the past. Nevertheless, the electricity price level is still around 5 percent higher than before the energy crisis.” In addition, households in Germany would be heavily burdened by taxes and levies at the price of electricity. “A reduction in electricity tax would therefore be a sensible step to permanently reduce household costs.”
