Gazprom did not resume pumping through the Yamal pipeline – Europe

Direct pumping of gas through Poland via the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline still remains close to zero, despite the purchase by Gazprom of part of the capacity of the Polish section of the pipeline. On Wednesday, February 2, data from the GSA Platform testify.

It is noted that for the first time since December 21, a small amount of contracted gas, 1.6 million cubic meters, was carried through Yamal-Europe at night from February 1 to February 2.

Gas supplies via the Polish route declined at the end of 2021; from December 21, the pipeline switched to reverse mode, when the original consumer, having received gas in ownership, supplies it in the opposite direction.

On December 23, Stanislav Mitrakhovich, an expert from the National Energy Security Fund and the Financial University under the Government of Russia, said that Gazprom would not book additional capacities of the Yamal-Europe gas pipeline until there were applications.

At the same time, those applications that exist will be satisfied in other ways, including through the use of the Nord Stream and Turkish Stream pipelines, as well as the Ukrainian Gas Transportation System (GTS), the expert noted.

He added: in the situation of high gas prices in Europe, the gas company has two options – to satisfy applications under long-term contracts or to additionally sell gas on its electronic trading platform. She does not want to do the second option, since she does not need to “bring down the price” of the energy carrier and “bring gas to the stock exchange, where there are no complete orders.”

According to Mitrahovich, theoretically, Gazprom “could be threatened with an antimonopoly investigation,” but now at the level of “key EU politicians, if you do not take individual representatives, for example Poland,” they are not talking about the need for such an investigation. This means that the holding “has nothing to be particularly afraid of.”
