With tariffs, US President Trump wants to force Mexico against the drug cartels. After a conversation with Mexico’s President, both come to an agreement – at least for the time being.
The United States initially exposes the announced tariffs against Mexico. “The tariffs are now exposed to a month,” said Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum after a phone call to US President Donald Trump on the platform X. Trump also confirmed Truth Social from the suspension of the tariffs. Sheinbaum reported a “good conversation”. It was agreed to suspend the announced tariffs of 25 percent for all Mexican products for a month.
“We had a good conversation with President Trump, in whom we respected our relationships and our sovereignty very much; we met a number of agreements,” she said. For example, she agreed with the Republican that Mexico would strengthen the northern border with 10,000 soldiers of the National Guard “to prevent Mexico drug trafficking to the United States, in particular the trade in fentanyl.” The United States, on the other hand, undertook to combat arms trade.
Negotiations during the suspension of tariffs
During the suspension of the tariffs, negotiations will take place in order to reach an agreement. These conversations would start on Monday and are going to be on security issues and trade, said Sheinbaum. “And I am sure that this month we will be able to deliver results”. Trump said that the negotiations under the direction of the Foreign, Trade and Finance Minister as well as high-ranking representatives of Mexico would take place. “I look forward to participating in these negotiations together with President Sheinbaum and trying to reach an agreement between our two countries,” said Trump.
At the weekend, Trump had made his threat and far -reaching tariffs on goods from Mexico, but also from Canada and China. In the case of Mexico, he not only criticizes imbalances in the trade. He also uses the threat of punitive tariffs to achieve Mexico’s tougher action against migration and drug cartels. Mexico is the most important trade partner in the United States. More than 80 percent of Mexico’s exports go to the neighboring country. Thousands of companies and millions of jobs depend on it.
