At the weekend, the US President imposes punitive tariffs against the northern neighbor Canada. Ottawa reacts accordingly. Before a phone call with counterpart Trudeau, Trump’s tone remains rough.
US President Donald Trump tightens the tone towards Canada as part of the customs offensive. “We do not need them for the cars. We don’t need them for timber. We need them for nothing. We don’t need them for energy,” said the Republican with a view to the trade relationships with Canada and fundamentally questioned them.
In this context, Trump repeated his demand to make the northern neighbor the “51st state” of the United States and to offer him military protection in return – to what extent he was serious that he was serious. However, he added: “There are no tariffs as a state. (…) I would like to see that.” Some people thought this was “far -fetched,” said Trump. “Many don’t want to play this game because they don’t have a high pain limit. It would hurt something, but not much.”
Trump stated that in the afternoon (local time) he would call the Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau. The US President announced on the weekend to impose far-reaching tariffs from Canada from the weekend. Trudeau then announced countermeasures.
