In the customs conflict between the USA and Canada and Mexico, there is initially a breather. The developments are being followed in Europe.
Against the background of the customs dispute between the United States and Canada, Federal Minister of Economics Robert Habeck spoke yesterday with his Canadian counterpart, Minister of Commerce Mary NG. According to the ministry, it was about the customs that was imposed by the new US President Donald Trump against Canada, now exposed to the Canadian G7 Presidency.
Canada took over the presidency this year. The conversation was constructive and trusting, according to the Ministry. In particular, the similarities underlined that customs spirals in the end had no winners.
A North American trade war with uncertain consequences for the global economy is at least averted for the time being. Trump was only a few hours before the threatened punitive tariffs in the amount of 25 percent on goods from neighboring countries Mexico and Canada, especially for concessions. For this he pushed the trade restrictions on for at least 30 days.
Trump has also threatened EU import products with tariffs. Habeck had warned the US government about a trade war with Europe. The EU is prepared for counter -tariffs.
