Warning strikes in parcel delivery: some packages remain

Day five in the Verdi warning strikes at the post office that started last week. Logistics staff make their frustration air over the working conditions.

Because of warning strikes at Deutsche Post, Germans must continue to expect slight delays in letters and packages. The Verdi union called on Wednesday to work in the parcel nationwide, according to the post office from the late morning, around 2,800 employees took part in around 250 locations.

The participation vary depending on the region and location, according to the post office. It was about Cologne, Herford, Münster and Siegen (NRW), Stuttgart, Freiburg and Offenburg (Baden-Württemberg) as well as Munich, Nuremberg, Augsburg and Neu-Ulm (Bavaria). In Germany, Swiss Post has 115,500 deliverers at 2,600 delivery base points.

Warning strike already on Tuesday

They often provide both packages and letters in the so -called composite delivery – it may be that the stripping in the parcel delivery also affects the amount of mail. In addition, the previous day, the letter sorting in overarching letter centers had been strike – so on Wednesday there were a little fewer letters to handle on Wednesday, which in turn remained empty.

A post-spokeswoman said that the warning strikes were estimated to reduce the amount of packages and letters delivered by a low single-digit percentage range. The logistician in Germany is estimated to be more than 40 million letters and more than 6 million packages in Germany on every working day. “We assume that the residues that arise can be processed promptly and, depending on the end of the strike activities, can be delivered within the next two days.” Deutsche Post belongs to the logistics group DHL.

More money and more relaxation required

Verdi calls for a fee plus of seven percent for the approximately 170,000 tariff employees of the Swiss Post in Germany. They should also get three extra vacation days. If you are a Verdi member, you should even get four additional vacation days. The union justifies its demand with the more expensive everyday life and the increased workload, which requires more free time and thus more recovery.

The mail goes too far, it demands an economically sustainable tariff increase. The company refers to the mailing quantities and the high investment needs in the digital age. The post office announced that the tariff round, which starts on February 12, announced an offer. For the warning strikes there is “no valid reason,” complained the post-spokeswoman.
