British government paves the way for more nuclear power plants
Unlike Germany, Great Britain fully focuses on nuclear power. The Labor government is launching a number of reforms.
In contrast to Germany, the British government promotes the massive expansion of atomic energy in the country with a number of reforms. Energy security was too long “a hostage” by Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Prime Minister Keir Starmer. “I’ll put an end to it.” Strander brings the country “back into the worldwide race for nuclear energy”, the government wrote.
Specifically, the construction of smaller and easier to create nuclear reactors – so -called small modular reactors (SMR) – should also be facilitated, which are not yet available in Great Britain. In Germany, the last three nuclear power plants were switched off in April 2023.
The last nuclear power plant was built in 1995 in Great Britain. The government said that the industry was “suffocated” by regulations that investments had therefore failed. The Hinkley Point C. power plant is currently under construction
The reforms also include that it is no longer possible to build at eight locations as before. In addition, a task force is to be created for the regulation of nuclear energy.
