Mexico, Canada, China – and soon the EU? US President Trump seems determined to raise additional tariffs on imports from Europe. Federal Minister of Finance Kukies sees room for negotiation.

In order to avoid a trade conflict with the United States, Federal Finance Minister Jörg Kukies believes that negotiations with US President Donald Trump are advisable. Trump said several times that “he would like to send more energy to Europe,” said the SPD politician in an interview with the “Bavarian Radio”. Europe is also very interested in such purchases.

“So there is also the opportunity to offer mutual negotiations before we go into trade conflicts, which may also lead to good agreement,” said Kukies. “We also saw the example of Mexico and Canada that shortly after the announcement of tariffs it was also possible to suspend it.”

In addition, Kukies would like to encourage the EU Commission, “which is responsible for this, only to conclude trade agreements”. He himself had the signals in the Gulf States as well as from India, Indonesia and Malaysia that there is great interest in trade agreements. “This is clearly in the interest of our export -oriented economy,” said the minister.

Trump has also announced against the EU tariffs. He last said there was no schedule, but “pretty soon” would happen.
