Berlin Central Station: Operation is restricted for weeks

Since the opening in 2006, traffic at the main train station has increased, and the underground station has been clogged. The train wants to counteract. But it gets worse for passengers.

From mid -February, travelers will have to adjust to considerable restrictions at Berlin Central Station. The lower level is blocked for a good two months due to construction work. Instead of the eight tracks, only four tracks can be used from February 17th to April 22, as Deutsche Bahn announced. On two extended weekends there is even a full closure of the eight tracks of the underground station.

Berlin stays well connected to long -distance traffic, it said. However, there will be changed arrival and departure times. “Only on the weekends of the full closures will the long -distance trains probably stop at other Berlin distant stations instead of Berlin Central Station and Südkreuz.” The S-Bahn and the above-ground part of the main station are not affected by the work.

Several lines in regional traffic are redirected

Several lines are diverted in regional traffic or hold out. The lines RE3, RE5, RB14 and RB23 as well as the Airport Express Fex are specifically affected. According to the information coming from the north, the RE5 already ends at the Berlin -Gesundbrunnen station – therefore fails between Gesundbrunnen and Südkreuz. The Airport Express also does not start the main train station. According to the train, it begins and ends in Lichtenberg with an additional support in Schönweide.

The RB23 trains run between Potsdam-Griebnitzsee and BER not as currently hour, but only every two hours. In some cases, the lines RE3, RB10 and RB231 are also affected. Individual trips of the RE3 in the rush hour traffic between Gesundbrunnen and Südkreuz are out and the RB21 line between Jungfernheide and Gesundbrunnen also occurs. With the RB10 and the RB21, travel times change slightly.

Six new switches and two signals are to be installed

The background is that six additional switches and two new signals on the tracks in the basement of the main train station should be installed, “so that trains get to the platforms faster and more flexibly in the future,” the message says. The train promises “quick effects on reliability and punctuality in the north-south connection”.

The federal group argues that the traffic at the capital city station has increased continuously since its opening in 2006. As an example, he mentions the hourly high -speed connection between Berlin and Munich. The travelers would feel the increased volume of traffic, for example, when the entrance to the underground station is delayed because the tracks are occupied.

The new course should ensure that trains can switch to the neighboring track, for example, with a filled track. With the new so -called “tensile cover signals”, two trains should be able to hold on a platform in the future. According to the train, more trains can be handled and long trains can be shared if necessary.

The complete lock of the underground station is planning the train from March 21 to March 24th and over the Easter holidays from April 18 to April 22nd.
