Economist survey: For years cloudy prospects for Germany

The German economy is doing badly, and shortly before the Bundestag election, one negative message chases the next.

Economists and business experts, almost worldwide, see the future prospects of the German economy cloudy for the next few years. According to this, German economic growth should not only be below the average of other industrialized countries this year, but also in 2026 and 2027. The IFO Institute and the Institute for Swiss Economic Policy surveyed almost 1,400 economists, scientists and other experts in 125 countries in December.

This year, participants expect growth of 0.4 percent, lower than in all other industrialized countries. The global economy overall could therefore increase by 2.9 percent. For 2025 and 2026, the business experts surveyed predicted somewhat higher growth rates of 1 or 1.3 percent in Germany, further below the average of other industrialized countries. According to the survey, the global economy as a whole could exceed the threshold of 3 percent growth in both years.

“Germany urgently needs a different economic policy that boosts growth again,” said IFO economist Niklas Potrafke. “Germany has lost massive attractiveness in the international location competition.”
