Discounter
“Admission money” at Aldi provides vertebrae – that is behind it

Some Aldi customers are upset: the discounter should already demand entrance fees in a branch in England to get into the shop at all. That is only partially true.
Waiting at the cash register and giving greater for change – that should soon be a thing of the past at Aldi. The discounter works to basically reform the payment process when shopping. The concept for this bears the name “Shop & Go” and is implemented in a branch in British Greenwich.
The changes are supposed to make the sometimes nerve -wracking purchase easier – but some customers make them annoy. We are talking about an “admission price” of ten pounds (the equivalent of twelve euros), which must be paid at the entrance to get into the shop at all.

This is how purchasing works without cash registers at Aldi
In practice, it looks like this: In the “Shop & Go” branch, customers register at the entrance with a QR code from the Aldi app or with a contactless payment method, be it a credit card or cell phone. In fact, ten pounds are reserved on the means of payment, even before you have bought anything. So it says in the general terms and conditions of the “Shop & Go” app from Aldi.
In the shop, customers put the goods in their shopping cart as usual. They follow cameras and register which goods a customer takes with them. There are no longer conventional health insurers in the branch: every customer can easily leave the building with their purchase, the price is automatically deducted from the previously registered payment method.
Customers receive their “entrance fee” back
The purchase price is charged with the ten pounds reserved at the entrance, explains Aldi. Anyone who has bought for less than ten pounds receives the difference. So this is by no means an admission price in the real sense.
How the money will be refunded soon after leaving the shop is dependent on the respective bank or the credit card institute, according to the terms and conditions. According to the portal “The Grocer” specializing in discounters and supermarkets, customers also report that ten pounds were deducted several times at the entrance if they accidentally pressed the button in the app. Some customers are also annoyed that the process is not clearly communicated in their view.
The goal of “Shop & Go” is to offer customers a seamless shopping experience and make shopping even easier, “explains Aldi Süd. Similar systems are also available from Amazon and Tesco. So far there is no “Shop & Go” branch in Germany.
