If you like to mix Piña Coladas, you have to be strong now: pineapple juice is becoming scarcer worldwide and therefore more expensive. The juice manufacturers have already explained why.
The fruit juice industry has complained of a scarce and more expensive range of pineapple juice on the world market.
“The manufacturers’ stocks are largely exhausted, and the harvests in the main growing countries are less than usual,” said the Association of the fruit juice industry in Bonn. The result is that the juice manufacturers received lower delivery quantities. The fresh fruits offered in stores are also significantly smaller than usual.
It was initially unclear whether this would also affect juice prices in retail. Pineapinary juice of well -known brands from concentrate cost just as much on Monday according to the price comparison portal Idealo in shipping as it was a year ago – 2.89 to 3.55 euros per liter. Discounters currently offer direct juices for 2.99 euros per liter.
Harvest failures in pineapple through drought – and too much rain
In Thailand and in the Philippines, harvesting due to dryness has decreased to less than 50 percent of the earlier harvest quantities, the association said. In Costa Rica in 2023 an extreme drought, in 2024 heavy rainfall also led to crop failures. According to VDF, direct juice now costs around $ 1300 (around $ 1259) per ton for industry, 50 percent more than half a year ago.
According to the industrial association, Thailand is the world’s largest producer of pineapple concentrate, followed by the Philippines and Indonesia. Direct juice comes mainly from Costa Rica. Due to the climatic conditions, pineapple cultivation is limited to regions near the equator. According to the VDF, 305 of the approximately 350 fruit juice manufacturers in Germany are represented.
