Despite all the economic problems, vacation in your own country is more popular than ever. A special accommodation form has kept your profits from the pandemic period.

Whether a half-timbered romance or camping vacation on the lake: Despite the stagnating economy, tourism in Germany has experienced a record year. In 2024, hotels and other accommodation companies with at least ten beds counted 496.1 million overnight stays, as reported by the Federal Statistical Office. That was 1.9 percent more than in the previous year and also 0.1 percent more than in the previous record year 2019.

The industry has finally left the break in the Corona period behind. The proportion of guests from abroad rose to 17.2 percent with 85.3 million overnight stays from 16.6 percent in 2023, but was unable to achieve the pre-pandemy level of 18.1 percent.

For the current year, the German Center for Tourism (DZT) is expecting a further increase to around 91 million overnight stays of international guests. A high level of safety, world -famous landmarks and a high quality level of the infrastructure are crucial.

In recent years, the number of overnight stays on campsites has risen to 42.9 million. Compared to 2019, they were almost able to record more overnight stays (19.9 percent) and thus stagger their strong development from the Corona years. The hotel industry is still 2.2 percent behind the values from 2019.

The outstanding values in camping have been reached despite numerous floods in the valley wages of southern and western Germany, says Managing Director Frank Schaal from the Federal Association of Camping Economy. “August 2024 was the best camping month ever. The industry did not write good numbers because of Corona. Ultimately, the number of overnight stays has doubled over the past 25 years.”

Study occupies unbroken travel guys

The unbroken desire to travel is also evidenced by the 41st tourism analysis of the Foundation for Future Questions. Of around 3,000 respondents, 63 percent undertook an at least five -day trip last year, as the scientific director Ulrich Reinhardt reports. That was two percentage points more than in the previous year and as many as in almost 20 years. “Vacation seems to be the most popular form of happiness in times of crisis,” concludes Reinhardt.

Bavaria and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania popular

In most cases, travelers moved to their own country. 36.2 percent of the respondents chose Germany as the goal for their main vacation trip. Regions near Bergen or the Baltic Sea are still like the most tempting for several days: People prefer to book accommodation in Bavaria (6.6 percent) and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania (5.6 percent). This is followed by Baden-Württemberg (4.7) and Lower Saxony (4.1). Spain is still ahead of the European Caums.

Summer by no means sold out

The industry also sees an unbroken desire for traveling for 2025 at customers. According to evaluations of the German Travel Association (DRV), more people have already booked their vacation, especially for summer than in previous years – the trend towards booking early continues.

So far, two percent more bookings for the summer season have been received by the TUI industry giant than in the previous year. The prices were four percent higher. While the organizer sold its winter offer 85 percent, most bookings are still pending for the hot season. Almost a third of the summer program has only been sold across the group. For Germany, the proportion is 30 percent.

Mediterranean also remains in demand

The numbers showed that Germany, as a travel destination, has a strong attraction again, says Reinhard Meyer, President of the German Tourism Association (DTV). “It is important to further improve the framework for the industry so that Germany is strengthened in its competitiveness towards other destinations.”

The DRV predicts stable sales growth from six percent compared to the previous year to around 85 billion euros for the overall market of vacation and leisure trips in the current tourism year. Around half of this sales take over on flat-rate and building entrances from organizers. Abroad, the holiday countries around the Mediterranean are particularly in demand for the summer.
