Gender Pay Gap

Wage gap between women and men becomes smaller

Women still get less remuneration for their work than men. Last year, however, the gap closed faster than ever before.

For the first time in 2020, the wage gap between men and women in Germany has shrunk again last year. The determined difference in earnings has decreased from 18 to 16 percent, as the Federal Statistical Office reports. The reason was the somewhat higher increases in wages that women were able to achieve in contrast to the men in 2024.

Since 2006, the wage gap, which is also known as the gender Pay GAP, has never closed as quickly as last year. In 2006 the earning difference was 23 percent.

Adjusted gender pay gap unchanged

In 2024, men earned an average of EUR 26.34 an hour, making 4.10 euros more than women. The statistics office with higher part -time rates of women and lower salaries in women typical of women explains almost two thirds of the wage gap. There remains a gap (adjusted gender pay gap) of 1.52 euros or around 6 percent of the gross-hour wage without a clear explanation. This value did not change in 2024.

Even with comparable work, qualifications and employment biography, women earn 6 percent less than men. The authority suspects that there are a role here, for example, in pregnancies, for children’s education or to maintain relatives, but are not recorded in more detail. It is assumed that it can be explained by further shares of the wage difference. In this respect, the 6 percent represented an upper limit for possible earning discrimination by the employers.
