Drink a glass of whiskey and say: it comes from Scotland. The spirit also seems popular in Germany – but the import numbers decrease.
Germany remains one of the world’s largest buyers for Scottish whiskey, but the import of alcohol drink goes back. As the Association Scotch Whiskey Association announced, the equivalent of 56 million bottles (70 cl) was exported to Germany with a value of £ 169 million last year. This means a decline of 14.2 percent compared to 2023 (197 million pounds).
Germany is therefore in value in nine of the ten largest customers, well behind the most important market in the United States (£ 971 million) and France (£ 419 million) and Singapore (£ 310 million). According to volume, India is the largest buyer.
The past year was challenging, said association leader Mark Kent. Exports to the traditionally strong markets in North America and the EU have become more difficult. Overall, the value of the 2024 whiskey exports was £ 5.4 billion, which means a decrease of 3.7 percent compared to 2023. The equivalent of 1.4 billion 70 CL bottles was exported, about 44 bottles per second.
